On Beyond Death

What happens when you die? If we are products of evolution, then that's it, right? No feeling, no consciousness, no awareness, just void. The bible speaks of resurrection and offers life after death. You really can't know unless you're dead. There are, however, people who have died and returned to life through methods like the resuscitation of heart attack victims.

A psychiatrist named Raymond Moody studied survivors of near-death episodes. He identified 9 traits that define near death experiences. They sound amazingly like claims made in the Bible. We share them with you here. Please keep in mind that the people experiencing near-death may have had one or more of the recollections, but none had all nine.

1) A sense of being dead.

At first people don't realize that they are experiencing near-death. They find themselves floating above their own bodies, feeling confused.

2) Painlessness and Peace.

60% of the people claimed their pain went away and everything was peaceful. "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be anymore pain…" (Revelation 21:4).

3) OBE – Out-of-body experiences.

37% had OBE's. Most said they are not simply a point of consciousness but seemed to be in some kind of body. There is a mistaken belief that spiritual means invisible, and carnal means material. There are invisible carnal thoughts like "hate" that exist here on our material world. There is also physical existence in the spiritual world we're headed to.

4) After the out-of-body experience, most people feel a rising up, see a tunnel open up and hear a hum, vibration or whoosh that propels them into darkness. The sense of heading towards an intense light is common to almost all tunnel experiences.

5) People of Light.

16% said at the other side of the tunnel are beings of intense light, which permeate everything and fill them with love. One person said, " I could describe this as 'light' or 'love' and it would be the same thing." And the city had no need of sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the lamb is the light thereof (Revelation 21:23).

7) A Review of Your Life

This is the one that scares us the most! The being of light often takes the person on a review of life, presenting it from a third-person perspective, like watching a movie! The person not only sees every action but also sees its effect on others in his life. He helps put your life's events in perspective.

8) Rising into the heavens.

Some people report a rise into the heavens, which enables them to see the universe the way astronauts do!Then he (Jesus) led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven(Luke 24:50-1).

9) Reluctance to return.

Many of the people find these surroundings so pleasing that they want to stay, and some even get angry with doctors for bringing them back! …For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better (Philippians 1:1,23). Where do they go from there?

A Medieval painting of the tunnel experience.

The Apostle Paul believed in a bodily resurrection and wrote about Jesus, "who will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body..."

6) The Being of Light

After meeting several beings of light, there is usually a meeting with a Supreme Being of Light. Whatever the name that's given to this holy presence, most people want to stay with him forever.

"This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5).
